On April 2, according to media reports, Ford Motor and Indian automaker Mahindra announced that as part of the abandonment of the Indian joint venture between the two companies, the two companies will not continue to cooperate on any agreed projects.
A Ford spokesperson said in a statement: “As part of the end of the cooperation, several cooperative product projects will not continue. We are currently reviewing these product projects.”
It is worth noting that 25 years ago, Ford entered the market, but only 2% of the market dominated by Suzuki and Hyundai.
It is understood that Ford and Mahindra once planned to develop at least three SUVs for India and emerging markets,
and considered sharing suppliers, power systems and technologies.
In December 2012, the company also announced that it was “actively evaluating”
its operations in India. But now Ford must make a decision whether to invest more money in its Indian business and start only producing cars for export,
or to withdraw from the Indian market altogether.
In addition, according to the original plan, the other two SUVs that Ford is developing and will be launched in 2023 and 2024 should use Mahindra’s engines.
According to sources, Ford now needs to find another supplier or invest in upgrading its own engines.
